The Academy is a society of outstanding scientists, artists and business leaders. Members of the Academy are appointed for life and join one of four Classes: Natural Sciences, Humanities, Arts and Technical Sciences. The members of the Academy frequently meet in the Palace of the Academies and discuss current developments in society from an interdisciplinary perspective. The Academy maintains ties with renowned experts who are elected as foreign members. It is not possible to apply for membership of the Academy. New members are elected after nomination by three patrons within the Academy.

Doctor of Science (Dr.Sc.) in Soil Science and Geomorphology, University of Wolverhampton, School of Applied Sciences, for proven record of internationally recognized scholarship (based on 208 research papers published in the period 1977 – 2007). This “higher doctorate” is awarded in recognition of a substantial and sustained contribution to scientific knowledge. On 9 May 2013, the Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi, Iasi, Romania, awarded to Jean Poesen the title of Honorary Professor (Doctor Honoris Causa) for his outstanding contribution to physical geography. http://www.uaic.ro/jean-poesen-profesor-de-onoare-la-universitatea-alexandru-ioan-cuza/ On 16 June 2013, Jean Poesen has been nominated foreign member (buitenlands lid) of the Koninklijke Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen (Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities; http://www.khmw.nl/), the oldest scientific society of The Netherlands (founded in 1752), aiming at promoting sciences and at bridging science and society. On April 9, 2014 I was one of the authors that received the “Best paper award” for a paper on “More people, more trees in South Eastern Tanzania: local and global drivers of land-use change” (by Kabanza A.K., S. Dondeyne, J.J. Tenga, D.N. Kimaro, J. Poesen, E. Kafiriti and J. Deckers) published in 2013 in the African Geographical Review, 32(1):44-58. This paper was adjudged the best paper of all those submitted in 2013 to the African Geographical Review. This award is given by the African Specialty Group (ASG) of the Association of American Geographers (AAG) (that owns and manages the African Geographical Review) at the AAG annual meeting (8-12 April 2014) in Tampa, Florida, USA. http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/19376812.2012.746093 On 24 April 2014, the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University (Uniwersytet Marii Curie-Skłodowskiej, UMCS) in Lublin, Poland, awarded to Jean Poesen the title of Doctor honoris causa (Dr.h.c., Honorary Professor). http://scienceinpoland.pap.pl/en/news/news%2C400224%2Cprof-jean-poesen-received-honorary-doctorate-of-maria-curie-sklodowska-university.html On 20 April 2016 I was awarded the European Geosciences Union (EGU, ca. 12500 members) Alexander von Humboldt Medal during the General Assembly of the union in Vienna, Austria, from 17-22 April 2016. The European Geosciences Union is dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in the geosciences and the planetary and space sciences for the benefit of humanity. The Alexander von Humboldt Medal is reserved for scientists who have performed research in developing regions for the benefit of people and society through which they have achieved exceptional international standing in geosciences and planetary and space sciences, defined in their widest senses. The EGU Awards & Medals programme recognises every year eminent scientists for their outstanding research contribution in the Earth, planetary and space sciences, and identifies the awardees as role models for the next generation of early career scientists to foster geosciences research. The EGU Union Medals are for senior scientists and are the most prestigious awards made by the Union that are associated with an EGU Honorary Membership. http://www.egu.eu/awards-medals/alexander-von-humboldt/2016/jean-w-a-poesen/ In July 2016 I was one of the authors that won the best poster award (for young researchers) at the 4th International Conference on Soil Bio- and Eco-Engineering – ‘The Use of Vegetation to Improve Slope Stability’ (SBEE2016, 11-14 July 2016, Sydney, Australia) with the poster W. Vannoppen, J. Poesen, S. De Baets, M. Vanmaercke, P. Peeters, B. Vandevoorde 2016.
